Sustainability Case Study
As a brand whose reason for being is the preservation of summer crops for year-round consumption,
Mrs Elswood recognises the importance of sustainability.
Water
Metal Lids
Water used in growing comes from
local groundwater and rivers.
Because metal recycles forever, Mrs
Elswood’s lids are made from recycled
steel and a thin layer of tin.
Recycled water is used
to wash the cucumbers
before packing, and
rainwater is collected
and used to cool down
the jars after they have
been heat-sealed.
Water in production is
monitored to reduce
consumption.
Paper Labels
Our labels are sourced
locally and made with
FSC-certi昀椀ed paper.
Inks used are waterbased, not solvent or
alcohol.
Cucumbers
Cucumbers are grown
in 昀椀elds under the
summer sun, without
energy used to heat a
glasshouse or cool a
refrigerator.
Over 99% of the
harvest is used.
Pickling Brine
Most Mrs Elswood
gherkins are pickled
directly in the jars,
with brine made to
order to minimise
wastage.
Ingredients
The glue used is
water-soluble for easy
removal of labels.
Lower Emissions
The production of our
gherkins is done in a
way that minimises
CO2 emissions, with
electricity coming from
green energy.
Glass Jars
Glass recycles forever,
and Mrs Elswood’s glass
jars are made with up to
85% recycled content.
Ingredients and packaging materials
are sourced locally where possible.
